Marathon is a place where the history is alive.  You will be visiting the museum of the Marathon Run, the 42.2 km/26.2 miles run, which was instituted in commemoration of the run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, the messenger who announced the victory to Athens and died after saying “ΝΕΝΙΚΗΚΑΜΕΝ” (“We have won!). Every year, runners  from all  around the world come to Greece for this run.

It is known as the place of one of the most important battles in ancient history, in which the allied Greek Forces lead by the great Athenian General Miltiades and his smart tactics, managed to defeat the army of the Persian Empire (490 BC).

The Marathon lake,  an artificial lake, came of a dam, was constructed at the junction of the rivers Haradros and Varnavas in 1929, in order to cover water supply needs of the city of Athens.

We will also be visiting the battlefield, the tomb of the 192 Athenian soldiers, the tomb of the 11 Plataieis and the archeological museum.
